Who came up with the bizarre idea to hold the ice hockey world cup during the Stanley Cup playoffs?

The ice hockey world cup is coming up but some players won’t get the chance to play for their country because of the Stanley Cup playoffs. This is frankly bizarre. Surely the highlight of a player’s career is to play for their country, and the world cup is 100 times more important than a domestic competition. If I was one of those players I would livid I could not play for my country.

For most hockey players around the world (including those in the European Leagues), the apex of the hockey world is the Stanley Cup. It is the oldest trophy in professional sports, and one of the hardest to win. Alexander Ovechkin has stated many times that his goal is to win the Stanley Cup. Several high profile NHL players whose teams did not make the playoffs, or were eliminated early, have turned down their country to rest for the next NHL season (Jarome Iginla this year, Mike Green and Sidney Crosby last year, Nicklas Lidstrom in 2003 and 2006). For a lot of these guys, the Stanley Cup is far more important.
