Should The Soccer Transfer Window Be Closed?
Yesterday was the last day until later in the year that UK clubs could buy and sell their players. This is a pre-designated month-long window of opportunity in which English clubs are allowed to buy in and sell players. Despite being a all of a month long, most business is done at the end of the period, especially in the last day when all the big money deals are commonly made.
Yesterday was no exception as Chelsea made a record bid for Liverpool’s Spanish striker Fernando Torres. The 50 million amount was an all time for an English club buying another English player, with that money you could get thousands of pressure washers, should you need them.
The story was huge as big players don’t often make a switch with the country they play in because of the bad press and grief they get from the fans of their previous club.
In what looked like a knee jerk reaction, Kenny Dalgliesh spent £35m on the much celebrated Newcastle striker and Geordie boy, Andy Carol, a huge amount that could net you hundreds of mobile phone accessories. It seems that this really sparked national outrage, many were baffled that such an amount had been spent on what is in effect an unproven player.
I contest that who are the media to define who is and isn’t ‘worth’ a certain amount of money? Surely a player is worth however much a club is prepared to pay for him, just as a professional is worth however much a company are willing to pay them in annual salary.
One thing is for sure Andy Carrol has no choice in the matter and will need to use sat nav to navigate his way to the North West. This could be the start of a Carol Legacy at Liverpool but of course the partnership could turn sour?
