Ciudad Del Este – City Or Shopping Mall?
Paraguay is not on the itinerary of most travelers visiting South America. There are many reasons for this, none of which implies that there isn’t much to see. If you are therefore planning a visit to Brazil, Argentina or Uruguay, a side-trip to Paraguay won’t cost much and you will have an amazingly good time.
Many travelers visit the Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil and Paraguay and then bring a quick visit to Ciudad de Este. This is often their one and only encounter with Paraguay.
If the aim of your visit, however, is to shop till you drop, Ciudad de Este is the place for you. This brash, noisy and sometimes polluted city is virtually one huge shopping mall. There are thousands of shops, both retail and wholesale. If you are a shop owner from Brazil or Argentina looking for a fine jewelry wholesale distributor, you will find several in one of the largest malls.
Musical instruments of all shapes and sizes are for sale here as well. Whether you are looking for the cheapest imported electric organ from China or a top quality epiphone electric guitar, you are sure to find it in one of the numerous stores. Do not simply pay the price the vendor asks for – do you homework before the time so you know what will be a good price and then haggle until you are happy with the price.
If you are a family man, Ciudad del Este caters for you as well. For your wife you will find rings or pendants made from semi-precious stones for reasonable prices. For the children there are toys galore and for the baby everything from baby toys to the latest spa baby bath. There are also numerous stores where you can buy small gifts for the family and friends back home.
Ciudad del Este lies only a few short km from a major tourist attraction: the world’s largest hydroelectric scheme. This massive dam, with it’s 20 turbines developing enough electricity to supply 40 million people, belongs to both Brazil and Paraguay. At the main entrance there are regular screenings of a film showing how the dam was constructed.
For those brave enough: there is now a guided tour that goes right into the wall of the dam. It’s an awesome sight to stand next to one of the massive turbines (there are 20 of them) that each generates sufficient electricity to supply a city of 2 million people. If you are lucky enough they will open the sluices when you are there – in that case prepare for an amazing experience which includes getting wet!
