What do the numbers underneath the 3 lions on an england cricket shirt represent?

It’s been bugging me for a while and i was just curious about their meaning…

They are “cap” numbers in order from the first man to play for England right up to the most recent cap.

Heres a link which shows them from number 1. Tom Armitage in 1877 to number 641 Graeme Swann
